Krafton Expands India Startup Bets with $50–60M Annual Allocation for VC Funds and Emerging Ventures

BGMI-maker Krafton commits $50–60M annually to back Indian early-to-growth startups and venture capital funds, accelerating investments in gaming, AI, and digital media.

South Korean video gaming and entertainment conglomerate Krafton, the creator of blockbuster title Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI), has announced an ambitious expansion of its Indian venture capital strategy. The company plans to deploy $50 million to $60 million annually into Indian startups, venture funds, and frontier technology creators, solidifying its position as one of the largest corporate venture investors in the subcontinent.

Having already invested over $170 million across 15+ Indian portfolio companies since 2021, Krafton’s renewed commitment signals sustained long-term confidence in India’s expanding digital consumer class, local gaming IP development, and AI-driven interactive entertainment.

Dual-Track Investment Strategy: Direct Equity & Fund-of-Funds

Krafton’s updated capital allocation framework adopts a two-pronged strategy designed to capture early market signals while securing substantial strategic stakes in high-growth companies.

Approximately 60% of the annual $50–60M allocation will be earmarked for direct equity checks in Seed to Series B startups spanning mobile gaming studios, esports platforms, regional creator economies, and generative AI content engines. The remaining 40% will be committed as a Limited Partner (LP) into top-tier Indian early-stage venture capital funds, providing Krafton with proprietary deal flow access across emerging deeptech and consumer verticals.

"India is not merely one of our largest user communities globally; it is rapidly evolving into a premier powerhouse for digital innovation, content creation, and software engineering,"
said Sean Hyunil Sohn, CEO of Krafton India. "Our annual commitment of $50–60M will foster local IP creation, support visionary founders, and catalyze an ecosystem where Indian games and digital media products compete on the global stage."

This institutional commitment aligns with broader venture fundraising milestones highlighted in Accel’s $550M eighth India fund and early-stage deeptech deployments by Bluehill.VC's ₹400 Cr frontier fund.

Focus on Regional IP Creation and Generative AI

A critical focus of Krafton’s fresh capital push is accelerating Indian-themed gaming intellectual property (IP). While BGMI continues to dominate domestic esports viewership, Krafton is actively incubating local indie game development teams capable of creating titles rooted in Indian mythology, regional narratives, and multiplayer mobile formats tailored for domestic bandwidth realities.

In parallel, Krafton is funding Indian startups leveraging generative AI for real-time asset rendering, multilingual NPC (non-player character) dialogue generation, and automated QA testing. By integrating AI pipelines, indie developers can drastically compress game production cycles from years to months.

Strengthening India's Digital Gaming Economy

The broader macroeconomic environment for digital entertainment in India remains highly supportive. With over 500 million mobile gamers, pervasive UPI micropayments, and high 5G penetration, gaming and digital consumer platforms are experiencing record monetization rates.

Industry analysts emphasize that Krafton’s steady programmatic funding provides much-needed patient capital to Indian gaming and media founders, helping build resilient, cash-flow-positive enterprises capable of competing in international markets.
