IT giant HCLTech is investing ₹3,500 crore to construct AI-focused data centres, enhancing India's sovereign AI computing capabilities.

Indian IT services leader HCLTech has announced a major strategic investment of ₹3,500 crore ($420 million) to construct and scale AI-focused data centres across the country. The initiative aims to support the surging demand for high-performance computing (HPC) required to train and host large-scale generative AI models locally, reinforcing India's sovereign AI capabilities.

Scaling Liquid-Cooled Infrastructure

AI workloads generate intense heat, necessitating specialized data center architecture. HCLTech's new facilities will feature advanced liquid-cooling technologies and optimized power configurations designed to house GPU-dense servers from leading hardware providers.

The company will collaborate with green energy suppliers to run these energy-intensive data centers sustainably, targeting carbon-neutral operations within five years.

Boosting Sovereign Compute Moats

The enterprise move comes as global regulators place stronger constraints on data residency: * Sovereign Compliance: Keeping sensitive corporate and citizen data within Indian borders prevents legal friction and improves national data security. * Low Latency API Access: Local data centres will permit Indian enterprise and public sector clients to deploy real-time AI agents with sub-10ms response times. * Hybrid Cloud Focus: Enabling companies to run hybrid setups combining private local hosting with public cloud instances.
