Crusoe Secures $500 Million to Build Methane-Powered AI Data Centers in North Dakota

Crusoe Energy secures $500 million to build carbon-negative data centers powered by captured methane flare gas to run energy-intensive AI training workloads.

Clean-tech infrastructure startup Crusoe Energy has closed a $500 million funding round to construct next-generation green AI data centers powered entirely by captured flare gas. By converting wasted methane gas from oil fields into clean electricity, Crusoe provides carbon-negative compute clusters tailored specifically for power-hungry generative AI training workloads.

Solving the AI Energy Crisis

The computing clusters required to train cutting-edge LLMs require massive amounts of electricity, stressing local power grids and increasing carbon emissions. At the same time, oil production sites vent or flare excess natural gas (primarily methane) into the atmosphere due to a lack of pipeline infrastructure.

"We are taking a waste product that harms the environment and turning it into compute power," explained Rohan Verma, Infrastructure Analyst at StartupWire. "Crusoe co-locates their modular data centers directly at the wellhead, using the gas that would otherwise be burned off to generate electricity for GPUs, cutting methane emissions by up to 98%."

Scaling Clean-Tech Infrastructure

With the new capital, Crusoe plans to: * Expand Computing Capacity: Procure and deploy thousands of next-gen GPUs inside mobile, modular datacenter containers. * Widen Geographic Footprint: Partner with energy producers across North America and West Asia to scale wellhead methane capture operations. * Partner with AI Labs: Offer carbon-neutral compute credits to leading artificial intelligence startups looking to offset their environmental footprints.

A Model for ESG-Compliant Computing

As institutional investors and regulators demand strict environmental compliance, ESG audits are becoming standard for AI startups. Crusoe's approach proves that scaling artificial intelligence does not have to come at the expense of the planet, demonstrating a circular economy solution for tech computing.
