IIT Madras and Navratna PSU Engineers India Limited partner to unveil the MC²+ Ignite initiative, providing capital, EPC engineering validation, and industrial pilot deployment for clean energy ventures.
CHENNAI & NEW DELHI — In a major public-academic partnership aimed at accelerating India's industrial decarbonization and energy sovereignty, the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) and Navratna public sector enterprise Engineers India Limited (EIL) have jointly launched 'MC²+ Ignite', a national deeptech clean energy startup accelerator. The MC²+ Ignite initiative (Materials, Climate, Carbon, and Energy) is specifically engineered to bridge the notorious "Commercial Valley of Death" that plagues hardtech energy innovators. By combining IIT Madras’s world-class computational research labs and incubation ecosystem with EIL’s extensive engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) industrial infrastructure, the program will transition lab-scale innovations into commercially validated, megawatt-scale industrial deployments.
The collaborative initiative accelerates the deeptech funding and policy tailwinds highlighted in India’s Deeptech Ecosystem Gains Policy and Funding Momentum: Capital Pivots to Semiconductors, Quantum, and Hard Tech and aligns with the clean tech manufacturing push analyzed in Ola Electric Secures ₹95 Crore PLI Incentive for Advanced Battery Cell Manufacturing.

Solving the Commercialization Bottleneck in Hardtech Energy
Unlike software startups that can iterate in purely virtual cloud environments with minimal capital expenditure, deeptech energy ventures face immense physical hurdles. Developing next-generation alkaline or PEM electrolyzers, solid-state battery electrolytes, or industrial carbon capture membranes requires multi-year pilot validations, high-pressure safety certifications, and access to active petrochemical or refinery test environments.
Without direct integration with industrial EPC players, promising laboratory breakthroughs frequently stall at Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 4 or 5.
MC²+ Ignite directly eliminates this bottleneck by offering startups: - Direct Refinery & Industrial Pilot Access: Startups will deploy pilot hardware directly within operating facilities managed by EIL and public sector oil and gas enterprises. - EPC Scale-Up Engineering: EIL’s veteran engineering teams will assist founders with process flow diagrams (PFD), piping and instrumentation designs (P&ID), and hazardous operational (HAZOP) compliance. - Grant Capital & Equity Co-Investment: Up to ₹3 Crore in non-dilutive prototype grants alongside syndication with sovereign climate venture funds.
India cannot achieve its Net-Zero 2070 targets by relying exclusively on imported clean energy hardware, remarked Prof. V. Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras. "Through MC²+ Ignite, we are creating a seamless superhighway that takes fundamental chemical, thermodynamic, and material science discoveries from our research labs and proves them inside operating heavy industries with the engineering rigor of Engineers India Limited."
